Our team and mission
  • The Generic Programme Line Business Applications - Space Solutions (BASS) has the goal of develop pre-operational services enabled by space technologies and/or data - possibly in partnership - for a wide range of users through the combination of different systems.
BASS activities aim at:
  • collecting user feedback for better tuning of the applications and the operation of all elements involved;
  • developing commercial sustainable space-based applications by linking user needs to corresponding solutions incorporating space assets with limited technology adaptations;
  • demonstrating to users and stakeholders that the proposed solutions work in their operational environment and are compatible with their operational practices;
  • utilising at least one space asset (such as Satellite Communications, Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation, Human Spaceflight technologies), leading to a better exploitation of existing space capacity and know-how together with a better understanding of how space technology should evolve to respond to user needs.

  • Two interns of complementary profiles shall work as a team to cover the below 2 topics.
  • Relevant experts will tutor you all along the intership.Topic 1: Sustainable mobility
Objective of the topic:
  • You shall aim to build a comprehensive understanding of the challenges, commercial opportunities and impact of satellite telecommunications when enable sustainable mobility services on the ground, at sea and in the air. This shall include the following tasks:
  • Identification of solutions in which satellite communication is integrated with digital non-space technologies, including AI, VR/AR and Unmanned/Robotics
  • Identification of key market opportunities and new services for breakthrough applications enabled by satellite connectivity (5G/6G, Broadband, massive IoT)
  • Support the identification and engagement of relevant industry stakeholders and public entities
  • Identification of technical and commercial risks related to the implementation of such services and propose mitigation actions
  • Analysis of innovative business models and value chains with involvement of space and non-space users and companies engaged in the process of sustainable mobility
  • Identification of the space impact to decarbonization in the context of sustainable mobility
  • Definition of the suitable economic&societal/environmental indicators and related impact of space-based services
  • Support management of ESA contracts.
Project inputs:
  • ESA will provide references and general introduction to the topic, but a degree of personal initiative shall be necessary.
Main Project outputs:
  • A report and final presentation, describing findings and recommendations
  • Topic 2: Energy, Circular Industry and Green Value
Objective of the topic:
  • You shall aim to build a comprehensive understanding of the challenges, commercial opportunities and impact of satellite telecommunications when used to support green transition in all relevant domain (e.g. energy, food production, tourism, smart cities). Note that mobility shall not be covered by you as this will be treated in a separated topic.
This shall include the following tasks:
  • How satellite communication can be integrated with digital non-space technologies, including AI, VR/AR and Unmanned/Robotics to support the green transformation
  • Identification of key market opportunities and new services for breakthrough applications enabled by satellite connectivity (5G/6G, Broadband, massive IoT)
  • Priorities business sectors, from the economic potential and decarbonization impact of space
  • Support the identification and engagement of relevant industry stakeholders and public entities
  • Identification of technical and commercial risks related to the implementation of such services and propose mitigation actions
  • Analysis of innovative business models and value chains with involvement of space and non-space users and companies engaged in the green transformation
  • Identification of the space impact to decarbonization in the context of sustainable mobility
  • Definition of the suitable economic&societal/environmental indicators and related impact of space-based services
  • Support management of ESA contracts.

Education
  • You must be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a University course at master's level in a technical or scientific discipline.
Additional requirements
  • The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
Desirable expertise:

  • Knowledge in telecommunication services needs and their evolution
