  • The embedded surgical instrument software team within Johnson & Johnson’s Surgical Vision (JJSV) R&D is recruiting for a full-time Staff Instrument IoT Software Engineer to support a major new digital health initiative. This position can be located in Milpitas, CA or Irvine, CA.

Position Summary
  • The Staff Instrument IoT Software Engineer will be responsible for the software design and release implementation of all IoT services embedded within JJSV’s medical device systems. This includes identifying key design strategy and software architecture, collaborating with internal organizations on existing development process and requirements enhancement, creating and communicating technical status to senior management. The goal is to deliver robust and secure embedded software for connected medical devices, from the concept phase and research through design, coding, simulation, testing, integration and debugging, to manufacturing and post-launch support.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead connected IoT embedded software development for multiple surgical instrument systems:
  • Work with cross-functional teams to evolve software functional requirements
  • Develop new database schema and refactor existing ones for secure design and interface to new APIs
  • Implement microservices for edge connectivity and cloud services
  • Develop connectivity library code modules for embedded application software calls
  • Design and develop a suite of embedded APIs
  • Provide seamless access and connectivity between embedded software devices and the larger technical ecosystem.
  • Refactor legacy patterns where required.
  • Collaborate with the cloud apps teams to implement long-term, sustainable architecture patterns
  • Support Global Product Security’s framework compliance:
  • Incorporate security and privacy requirements in SRS
  • Implement database encryption
  • Partner with internal organizations to improve existing security processes and policies
  • Deliver embedded IoT software commercial release:
  • Lead Agile scrum development process
  • Contribute to the design control documentation and project stage gate process
  • Organize technical reviews
  • Design and supervise unit testing
  • Support V&V and post-release patching

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required, MS and/or advanced degree is preferred
  • A minimum of 4+ years of experience in database, cloud based IoT, and embedded software engineering functions is desired
  • C/C++, C# coding skill is preferred
  • Expertise in SQL is preferred
  • IoT and microservices APIs development experience is required
  • Understanding Windows OS embedded operating system security patching and vulnerability assessment is required
  • DICOM/PACS development experience is preferred
  • Software release CI/CD practice is preferred
  • Experience taking concepts from design, through build, production release, and stable support.
  • Knowledge of product or medical device security is preferred
  • Understanding of Quality Design Control processes and FDA submission process is preferred
  • Big Picture/Attention to Detail – align strategic and tactical
  • Must be results oriented and ability to drive to timelines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required and ability to collaborate with external enterprise functions (e.g., global privacy, information security and risk management, regulatory)
  • Creative problem-solving skills and strong customer focus (internal & external) is required
  • This role can be located in Irvine, CA or Milpitas, CA and may require up to 10% travel
